From self portraits to street art 1 000 museums at your fingertips ABOUT ZENFONE - From self-portraits to street art: 1,000 museums at your fingertips , The history of art is global. Look at Van Gogha Dutchman who spent much of his life in France, and was inspired not only by his contemporaries but also by Japanese artists like Hiroshige. But until recently, the act of enjoying art and culture was limited by geography. Unless you could visit a museum in person, it would be hard for you to appreciate a work, brushstroke by brushstroke. And to fully understand the legacy of someone like Van Gogh, you would have to go from Amsterdam to Chicago to New York to Tokyo to discover and marvel at all of his influences, works and successors. Left: Van Goghs self-portrait (Chicago), right: a street art re-interpretation (Amsterdam) But with the Google Cultural Institute, its all just a few clicks away. Five years ago, the first 17 museums brought online a few hundred artworks so that anyone in ...

D D on Barsoom art by Chris Holmes Dungeons & Dragons on Barsoom, artwork by Chris Holmes, 1980 This fantastic artwork by Chris Holmes shows John Carter battling a Thark, perhaps Tars Tharkas. Chris told me that the sheet was used a player recruitment sheet at a long ago  Gen Con and it seems most likely this was 1980 (the art is signed "Chris Holmes 80").  The text reads: "Dungeons and Dragons on Barsoom. A Fantasy Role Playing Game on Edgar Rice Burroughs world of Mars. For 8 players Exp. Level 3. Free Event. No Prize. Meet at 10:00 AM SUNDAY Morning and we will try to find a place to play. Sign up below. Chris Holmes", with an update: "We are just to the left of this note". J. Eric Holmes and Chris had run this same game at Gen Con 78 and 79 as listed in the pr ogram books for those conventions. The 1979 program book has the following brief description: " Ever wondered what happened when your character got teleported to Mars? Find out in this ...

An eye for detail Zoom through 1 000 artworks thanks to the new Art Camera from the Google Cultural Institute ABOUT ZENFONE - An eye for detail: Zoom through 1,000 artworks thanks to the new Art Camera from the Google Cultural Institute , So much of the beauty and power of art lives in the details. You can only fully appreciate the genius of artists like Monet or Van Gogh when you stand so close to a masterpiece that your nose almost touches it. As you step back from the brush strokes, you wonder how it all comes together. At the Google Cultural Institute, we know that people love experiencing art in close detail. Millions of people spend time exploring our ultra-high resolution gigapixel images, inch by inchspotting something new every time, like a hidden signature or the individual dabs of paint that give the impression of shimmering, turbulent waters. Zooming into these images is the closest thing to walking up to the real thing with a magnifying glass. This is why were so excit...

Graphic Ink The DC Comics Art Of Gary Frank

Image
Graphic Ink The DC Comics Art Of Gary Frank Through the magic of the internet, I stumbled upon this image by Gary Frank, a promotional piece for a book titled GRAPHIC INK: THE DC COMICS ART OF GARY FRANK. The book is still up on the DC site despite being shelved. Here is that link: http://www.dccomics.com/graphic-novels/graphic-ink-the-dc-comics-art-of-gary-frank Ive been a fan of Franks art since his early work on the Peter David Supergirl site. And while not from DC, I loved his work on Supreme Power. Just gorgeous stuff there. Looking at this image, you can see the breadth of Franks work in DC. Obviously he had some time with Superman with Geoff Johns. But you also see the Stan Lee Imagines Shazam, the Tangent Flash, Black Canary (he was one of the first artists on Birds of Prey), and the actual Marvel Family while on Justice League (again with Johns). And his take on the Legion was great in that Action Comics run. This is a great piece, worthy of a poster. But you can guess the tw...
